Church Health Team Book Study

Help Thanks Wow

"I do not know much about God and prayer, but I have come to believe, over the past twenty-five years, that there's something to be said about keeping prayer simple. Help. Thanks. Wow. You may in fact be wondering what I even mean when I use the word "prayer." It's certainly not what TV Christians mean. It's not for display purposes, like plastic sushi or neon. Prayer is private, even when we pray with others. It is communication from the heart to that which surpasses understanding. Let's say it is communication from one's heart to God.”

"My three prayers are variations on Help, Thanks, Wow. That's all I'll ever need, besides the silence, the pain, and the pause sufficient for me to stop, close my eyes, and turn inward."

-from the Prelude of Anne Lamott's book Help Thanks Wow: The Three Essential Prayers.

During the month of November, on Sundays from 9:30-10:25, the Church Health Team invites you to come and study, listen, and share on the topic of prayer, as we use Lamott’s book as a discussion starter. Grab a cup of coffee and meet us as we let Lamott guide our discussion. If you need us to order you a book, please be certain to mark that on the sign up sheet (cost approx. $11). Or you can get your own copy or borrow it from the library.

We will discuss the Prelude (Prayer 101) on November 5; Help on November 12; Thanks on November 19; and Wow & Amen on November 26. Please feel free to participate as you are able. Reading the assignments will help you be able to participate, but we will all have plenty to learn together in our discussion even if you can’t read it ahead of time. Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30am during November.

If you have questions, please ask Kerry, Rich G., Pam, or Gretchen.
