Gay & Straight Together Ministry

The Gay & Straight Together Ministry focuses on reaching out to GLBT folks and sponsoring educational sessions for all in the congregation.

We honor Jesus as our Lord and Savior by doing ministry as He did while on earth - treating everyone with compassion, love and respect.  We honor Jesus by treating our brothers and sisters in Christ as we would Jesus himself, since all are to be Christ in the flesh.  We are all His treasured children.  This ministry focuses its efforts on creating opportunities to reinforce this belief with our GLBT neighbors and friends.

Welcoming all of God's Children to worship, praise, and serve our Creator God side-by-side will enable us to show gay and lesbian folks that Jesus is Lord of our life.

Transgender: The Forgotten People—Part II

On Sunday, October 30, The Gay and Straight Together Ministry will present Transgender: The Forgotten People—Part II. The focus of this presentation will be supporting the families and friends of transgender people. The event will begin at 12:30 pm with a light lunch. It will be followed by the presentation from 1 to 3 pm.

There will be a light lunch of pizza and salad from 12:30 to 1 pm. The presentation will begin at 1 pm and will consist of viewing a video featuring parents and their transgender children. This will be followed by a mom sharing her family’s journey with her transgender child. Time for Q&A will end the afternoon.

Ms. Beth Russo is the facilitator for the day. Beth is 37 and a mother of a middle grade transgender child. Beth is also a member of PFLAG and PTI (Parents of Transgender Individual). Beth is an on-call Mom for PFLAG and PTI. (Families with a transgender child that are struggling, can contact PFLAG and Beth. She will talk with them as needed.) Beth and her child helped develop a Gay Straight Alliance at her child’s school.

Beth is also an active runner and cyclist. Her claim to fame is that this summer she rode 200 miles on the Ride for AIDS Chicago. Her passion is using the body that God gave her to cycle and run for changes that bring Light and Love into this world. Beth says she has two champions in her life who keep her going—her husband Chris and her son Kyle.

This will be a safe environment for discussing real-life stories of the struggles and triumphs of many of God’s children, and not the sensationalized versions so popular in today’s media.

The presentation is free. A free-will offering will be accepted. Parking is in back of the church. Please RSVP to Carolyn Doughty at by Oct. 26 so we can prepare for the meal and resources.
